Peoria Mayor's Advisory Committee for the Disabled considers name change

The city of Peoria Mayor's Advisory Committee for the Disabled met March 8.

The purpose of the Advisory Committee for the Disabled is to represent and promote the interest of citizens with disabilities to the end that there shall be adequate public and private services for maintaining and improving the health and welfare of persons with disabilities; adequate dissemination of information concerning the interest, problems and affairs of persons with disabilities; adequate community and individual activities to stimulate and fulfill the interest of persons with disabilities; and to develop new ways to utilize the talents and resources of citizens with disabilities. The committee meets on the second Tuesday of the month at 4:00 p.m. at City Hall, 419 Fulton St.

The meeting was held on March 8, 2016, at 4:08 p.m. at City Hall Building, 419 Fulton St, Room 404, Committee Member Stephanie McGinnis, Chair presided.

ROLL CALL

Roll call showed the following committee members present: Laurie Atkinson, Stephanie McGinnis, Doris Hayes, Kendra Moses-Hagan and Melynda McKeever – 5. Absent: Teri Miller and Mike Van Cleve – 2. Also present was Staff Liaison David Watkins, Equal Opportunity Manager.

MINUTES

Committee Member Laura Atkinson motioned to approve the February meeting minutes. The motion was seconded by Committee Member Doris Hayes.

Motion was approved by unanimous voice vote

March Madness – Special Needs Information Fair

The members reviewed who would be covering the table at the event. Committee Member Kendra Moses-Hagan said she would pick up the materials for hand out and the banner from Staff Liaison David Watkins next week.

Membership on Committee

Committee Member Stephanie McGinnis reported the Mayor suggested adding volunteers to the committee as a way of finding potential new members. He said the idea has worked for other commissions. The Mayor envisioned the volunteers participating in discussions at meetings, attending executive sessions but not possessing the ability to vote.

Changing Committee Name

Committee Member Stephanie McGinnis mentioned met with the Mayor about changing the name on March 7, 2016. After hearing why the committee wanted to rename the committee, the Mayor said he was ready to support the change. He also said he wanted the committee to choose the new name.

As discussion continued, the members considered voting on the name change at this meeting, but after some more discussion they decided to wait until all of the members could be present. Committee Member Stephanie McGinnis, Chair told Staff Liaison David Watkins to place the topic on next month’s agenda.

Committee Member Laurie Atkinson motioned to adjourn the meeting; seconded by Committee Member Kendra Mosses-Hagan.
