The City of Peoria issued a sewage warning on March 28, 2024, following a combined sewer overflow (CSO) into the Illinois River due to recent rainfall. Residents are advised to exercise caution and avoid full-body contact with the Illinois River in the area downstream from Detweiller Marina. The warning states, "When this warning is posted, please avoid full-body contact with the Illinois River in the area downstream from Detweiller Marina. You may get sick if you swallow water while swimming, Jet Skiing, or water skiing in these areas after a combined sewer overflow."

In response to the situation, the City of Peoria is actively working on projects to reduce combined sewer overflows (CSOs) to the Illinois River during wet weather. This initiative comes as a requirement under the Clean Water Act and the CSO Consent Decree. As mentioned by the city, "The City of Peoria is constructing projects to reduce combined sewer overflows (CSOs) to the Illinois River during wet weather, as required under the Clean Water Act and the CSO Consent Decree."
