The City of Peoria announced on Apr. 2 that recent rainfall has caused a combined sewer overflow into the Illinois River from one or more locations within the city.
The alert is important for residents and visitors who use the river, as exposure to contaminated water can pose health risks. The city warns people to avoid full-body contact with the Illinois River downstream from Detweiller Marina following this event.
According to the announcement, there is an increased risk of illness if individuals swallow water while swimming, Jet Skiing, or water skiing in affected areas after a combined sewer overflow. The warning comes as part of ongoing efforts by Peoria to address wet weather overflows under federal requirements.
The City of Peoria stated it is constructing projects aimed at reducing these overflows during periods of heavy rain. These initiatives are being carried out in accordance with the Clean Water Act and obligations outlined in the CSO Consent Decree.
Residents are encouraged to check maps provided by the city for specific locations impacted by overflows and to follow all posted warnings until further notice.
