Darin LaHood, a U.S. Congressman representing Illinois’ 16th district since 2015, has recently used his social media platform to criticize Senate Democrats over the ongoing government shutdown. In a series of posts, LaHood accused Democratic leadership of risking essential government services and obstructing efforts to pass a continuing resolution (CR).
On October 1, 2025, LaHood wrote, “Last night, Senate Democrats decided to put critical services for the American people at risk and launch us into the Schumer Shutdown. They need to put politics aside and support the clean CR that @HouseGOP passed nearly two weeks ago.”
The following day, he continued his criticism by highlighting past Democratic support for similar measures: “Democrats supported 13 separate CRs under the Biden Administration. Now that Trump is in office, Chuck Schumer and Senate Democrats are blocking a clean CR and holding the government hostage in a desperate attempt to appease the far-left wing of their party.” This post references both current political dynamics and recent changes in presidential administration.
As the shutdown persisted on October 3, LaHood reassured constituents about his office’s operations: “As the Schumer Shutdown continues, my offices will remain open and ready to serve the people of #IL16. Please don’t hesitate to reach out to one of my offices if you have questions or need help navigating the federal government. We will assist our constituents in any way we can.”
LaHood was elected to Congress after defeating Elizabeth Haderlein in 2022 with approximately 66% of the vote. He succeeded Aaron Schock as representative for Illinois’ 16th district.
