Free at-home colon cancer screening kits will be distributed at several drive-thru events in central Illinois this March. The Regional Cancer Partnership, which includes Memorial Health, SIU School of Medicine, Springfield Clinic and HSHS St. John’s Hospital, is sponsoring the initiative.
“March is Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, and we encourage everyone to take advantage of this free screening opportunity,” said Tia Rapps, community cancer education coordinator for the Regional Cancer Center. “This is one of the simplest ways to protect your health. Screening from the comfort of your home could truly save your life. Kits are available while supplies last, so don’t wait. Early detection makes all the difference.”
The events will take place in Decatur, Jacksonville, Lincoln, Springfield and Taylorville on various dates throughout March. Participants can pick up kits at designated drive-thru locations by following signs and remaining in their vehicles.
After picking up a kit, individuals are instructed to mail back completed tests using a postage-paid envelope within 10 days. Results will be sent by letter.
At-home colorectal cancer screenings are recommended for adults aged 45 and older as well as those with risk factors such as a history of colorectal polyps or inflammatory bowel disease, diets high in processed foods or red meat, smoking habits, obesity or heavy alcohol use. Younger adults may also request a kit due to rising cancer rates among this group. For people over 76 years old, screening decisions should consider personal health status and previous screening history.
Anyone 18 or older can receive a kit if they have any risk factors listed above.
