Paving work on Jefferson Avenue and Walnut Street is scheduled to begin at 7 a.m. on April 16, according to a statement released by the City of Peoria. Striping will also start on Adams Street in the south side parking lane, resulting in several lane closures and parking restrictions throughout the area.
The planned roadwork is expected to cause delays of up to 30 minutes for drivers traveling through Jefferson Avenue from Fayette Street to N. William Kumpf Boulevard, as well as Walnut Street between S.W. Adams Street and S.W. Jefferson Avenue. The city strongly advises motorists to use alternative routes while paving is underway.
During construction, periodic lane closures will occur on Walnut Street between S.W. Adams Street and S.W. Jefferson Avenue, with changing closures in the 300 block throughout the day. The two far-left lanes on Jefferson Avenue from the Interstate 74 overpass to N. William Kumpf Boulevard will remain closed to all traffic.
Parking restrictions are also being enforced during this period: The south side parking lane on Adams Street from N. William Kumpf Boulevard to Hamilton Boulevard will be closed until striping work is completed; similarly, the south side parking lane on Jefferson Avenue from Interstate 74 overpass to N. William Kumpf Boulevard remains closed; no on-street parking will be allowed along Walnut Street between S.W. Adams Street and S.W. Jefferson Avenue while meters are bagged—vehicles parked in restricted areas risk being towed.
Drivers accessing or exiting local parking decks should expect long delays due to construction activity, particularly at the Jefferson Parking Deck and County of Peoria Parking Deck entrances and exits; using S.W. Adams Street for deck access is recommended by officials.
Additional off-street options remain available at Niagara and Twin Towers decks, which can be accessed via Madison Avenue or Monroe Street for entry onto Fulton Street.
Lane closures and restrictions may change daily as resurfacing continues into early summer—the final months of the Adams Street and Jefferson Avenue One-Way to Two-Way Conversion Project.
