Several Peoria County government offices will be closed to the public on Friday, April 3, according to an announcement made on April 2. The closure affects the Peoria County Courthouse, Peoria City/County Health Department, Regional Office of Education, Veterans Assistance Commission, Coroner’s Office, Election Commission, Animal Protection Services (PCAPS), and Highway Department office.
The PCAPS facility will remain closed from Friday through Sunday, with no animal adoption hours available on Saturday. However, animal control officers can still be reached at 309-674-3131 during normal business hours while the shelter is closed.
The Peoria County Sheriff’s Office, Jail, and Juvenile Detention Center will continue operations but will not offer records services or in-person visitation during the closure. Remote visitation for inmates remains available throughout this period and the bonding lobby will operate under regular hours. Additional information about departments within the courthouse and a complete list of county holidays can be found on the county’s website.
Education statistics provide context for county services impacted by closures such as those at the Regional Office of Education. The average student-to-teacher ratio in Peoria County was 15-to-1 in the 2022-23 school year with a total enrollment of 27,081 students and 1,844 full-time faculty members across all schools according to state education data. Teacher absenteeism in local schools stood at 32.3% during that period compared to Illinois’ statewide average of 35.6% as reported by state officials.
Among local schools in Peoria County during the same academic year: Dunlap High School had the highest enrollment of white students with a total of 873; Richwoods High School had the highest number of multiracial students at 182; Lincoln School enrolled more Hispanic students than any other school with a count of 218; and Peoria High School recorded an enrollment high among Black students at 798 according to state education reports.
These figures illustrate ongoing demographic trends within area schools as county offices observe scheduled holiday closures.
