The City of Peoria Department of Public Works announced on March 15 that it will begin 12-hour, around-the-clock operations starting at 7 p.m. in response to winter weather expected to affect the area overnight and into Monday morning.

The announcement comes as forecasts predict rain will turn to snow as temperatures drop, with strong winds likely to create blizzard-like conditions, reduced visibility, and rapidly changing road conditions. The department said these measures are intended to keep streets as safe as possible for travel during the adverse weather.

Public Works crews will monitor conditions throughout the night and treat roadways as needed. Their focus will be on arterial streets, including hills, bridges, and intersections, while also responding to problem areas that may develop due to the storm.

Residents are advised that travel could be affected both overnight and during the Monday morning commute. Drivers are encouraged to allow extra time for their journeys since roads may become slick when rain transitions to snow and temperatures fall. Motorists are urged by officials to slow down and use extra caution when traveling overnight or on Monday morning.

For additional information about the Department’s winter operations, residents can call 309-494-8800.
