Peoria airport road construction begins today

Road

Construction beginning today at the General Wayne A. Downing Peoria International Airport will reduce the airport entrance road to one lane in some areas, possibly through late November.

Meanwhile, American Airlines is utilizing gates in the new terminal during the construction.

Concrete from Gate 5 east to Byerly Aviation – some of the oldest pavement at the airport – is being replaced this summer and next. Each phase costs approximately $4.5 million, with 90 percent of the funding coming from federal airline ticket fees. The state of Illinois and the Metropolitan Airport Authority of Peoria will each cover 5 percent.

“The disruption to our passengers will be minimal,” Director of Airports Gene Olson said. “Portions of the entrance road will be closed for construction access, and American Airlines will be using new gates, but outside of adding a few minutes more to walk to a new gate, our travelers’ experience will be as easy as it’s ever been.”

American Airlines passengers will be the first to experience the Ray LaHood International Terminal, connected to the main terminal by an enclosed walkway. Dedicated in honor of the former U.S. Transportation Secretary in April, this terminal includes a full-service Customs and Border Protection facility, plus two dual-purpose gates for domestic or international travel.
