Brimfield Community Unified School District 309 Board of Education met Feb. 21.

Here is the minutes provided by the Board:

The Brimfield Board of Education held its regular meeting on Wednesday, February 21, 2018 at 7:00 p.m. in the High School Library. Heinz called the meeting to order with the following members present: Graham, Thompson, Updyke, and Hoerr.

The board recognized eleven community members: Dave Hicke, Jason Juchems, Aaryn Jennings, Jerry Stewart, Lonnye Gilles, Phil Molleck, Diana Molleck, Willie Howe, Margaret Garls, Joe Kelch, Michele Miller, and Ted Riggenbach.

Board President Heinz welcomed comments from the community members. Willie Howe inquired on if the District would be seeking bids on IT services towards the end of the current contract with Heart Technologies; Superintendent Richardson informed him that is the current process upon the end of any contract. Additionally, Howe expressed concerned with how the parents are (not) informed of threats made to the school’s staff or students. Superintendent Richardson informed him procedures were followed, and, since the most recent threat was from off school grounds, it has remained off school grounds; the matter is still being investigated.

Updyke moved and Hoerr seconded to approve the January 17, 2017 regular and closed session minutes. Motion carried

Todd Johnson was officially seated as a member of the Brimfield CUSD 309 Board of Education.

Thompson moved and Updyke seconded to open nominations for Vice President of the Brimfield CUSD 309 Board of Education. Motion carried

Heinz nominated John Thompson. No opposition.

Updyke moved and Graham seconded to close nominations for Vice President. Motion carried.

Hoerr moved and Updyke seconded to elect John Thompson as the Vice President of the Brimfield CUSD 309 School Board. Motion carried

Mr. Richardson reported on his board report. He mentioned an IASB meeting that is taking place in March; all are welcome to attend.

Mrs. Blane reported on her Grade School board report.

Heinz mentioned a couple of meetings that had recently taken place- in particular- the finance committee and staffing committee- to address the possibility of separating the HS Principal/Superintendent position. Public comments were welcome and seem to be in favor of the separation of duties. The Principal could assist with discipline, threats, checks and balances, and even assist the GS Principal where needed. The Superintendent could then focus more on Administrative duties.

Hoerr moved and Thompson seconded to approve employing a HS Principal. Roll Call: Johnson-yes, Thompson-yes, Graham-yes, Updyke-yes, Hoerr-yes, Heinz-yes. Motion carried

Updyke moved and Thompson seconded to approve the 2018-2019 School Year Calendar. Roll Call: Johnson-yes, Thompson- yes, Graham- yes, Updyke- yes, Hoerr- yes, Heinz- yes. Motion carried

Updyke moved and Graham seconded to approve Consent Calendar items. Roll Call: Johnson-yes, Thompson- yes, Graham - yes, Updyke - yes, Hoerr - yes, Heinz - yes. Motion carried

At 7:30pm, Updyke moved and Johnson seconded to leave open session and enter closed session to discuss the appointment, employment, compensation, discipline, performance or dismissal of an employee Open Meetings Act, 5 ILCS 120, being Sec. 2 (c) Roll Call: Johnson-yes, Graham - yes, Thompson - yes, Updyke - yes, Hoerr - yes, Heinz - yes. Motion carried

The board members returned from closed session at 9:17pm.

Thompson moved and Updyke seconded to approve the resignation of Golf Coach Kevin Kreiter. Roll Call: Johnson-yes, Thompson-yes, Graham-yes, Updyke-yes, Hoerr- yes, Heinz-yes. Motion carried

Graham moved and Hoerr seconded the hire of Bridget Bankes as the Softball Coach. Roll Call: Johnson-yes, Thompson-yes, Graham-yes, Updyke-yes, Hoerr-yes, Heinz- yes. Motion carried

At 9:18 p.m. Updyke moved and Johnson seconded to adjourn the February 21, 2018 regular board meeting of the Brimfield CUSD #309 Board of Education. Motion carried
