Avon Community Unit School District 176 issued the following announcement on July 10.
Students from all over the Farmington Valley will perform the full-length musical featuring the music of Queen: We Will Rock You: School Edition. This smash-hit from London's West End features more than 20 hit Queen songs, and follows two revolutionaries as they try to save Rock in a post-apocalyptic world. Featuring the songs “Another One Bites the Dust,” “Bohemian Rhapsody,” “Killer Queen,” “We Will Rock You,” “Somebody To Love,” “We Are The Champions,” “Don’t Stop Me Now” and many more.
After a victorious 12 year reign and having rocked over 7,376,485 people in a record-breaking 12 years at the London Dominion Theatre, We Will Rock You played its final London performance on May 31, 2014. With 4,659 performances played, the epic musical achieved the distinction of becoming the longest running show ever at London’s Dominion by a margin of nine years and took its rightful place in London West End history, sitting proudly in the Top 10 longest running musicals of all time. By this timeWe Will Rock You had been performed in 28 countries around the globe and seen by more than 16 million people. This summer’s local production of We Will Rock You marks the 58th continuous summer musical presented by Avon Summer Theater.
Avon Summer Theater draws students from many surrounding towns and schools who will come together to create and perform this exciting show. Avon Summer Theater began in the late 1950's as an Avon Public School summer music and arts program developed by Avon High School teachers Joseph Donato, Paul McMahon, and Fran Lynch. In 1961 they produced their first musical, The King and I. In the summers following, they continued their summer musical tradition with productions of Peter Pan, Carousel, Annie Get Your Gun and more. The summer theater torch was then passed to many others over the years, leading to this summer's 58th musical. We Will Rock You features lots of music and dance and is appropriate for all ages.
We Will Rock You will be performed at Avon High School Auditorium, 510 West Avon Road, Avon. Performance dates are July 20, 21 at 7:30 pm, and July 22 at 2 pm. Tickets are $15/$10 for general seating. The box office will open at 6:30, with doors opening at 7:00.
