Canton Union School District 66 students suspended 299 times in a single school year

Canton Union School District 66 reported 299 suspensions for 2016-17, according to the latest student discipline report by the Illinois State Board of Education.

According to the report, the district expelled or suspended 299 students during the year. That equates to 11.6 percent of the 2,573 students enrolled.

Of the 233 in-school suspensions, 177 were given to boys and 56 were given to girls, including 168 elementary or middle schoolers and 65 high schoolers.

The district reported that most in-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 142 incidents. There were 78 incidents of violence without physical injury. For 206 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.

Of the 66 out-of-school suspensions, 53 were given to boys and 13 were given to girls, including 27 elementary or middle schoolers and 39 high schoolers.

The district reported that most out-of-school suspensions were given for unspecified reasons. The category includes 46 incidents. There were 11 incidents of violence without physical injury. For 26 incidents, students were suspended for a day or less.
