City of Mason City Council met Aug. 20.

Here is the minutes provided by the Council:

Call to order by Mayor Bruce Lowe.

Council members physically present were Aldermen Gerald Mahin, Dan Mason, John Dodson, and Jim Miller. Alderman Francis arrived at 7:10 p.m., Alderman Kirby was absent. Also present were City Clerk Michele Whitehead, Chief Adam Anderson, and Asst. Chief Donovan.

The Chairman declared quorum present.

The $500.00 contribution to the Fall Festival was approved.

Chief Anderson spoke about the School Resource Officer program. Officer Donovan will be the departments School Resource Officer. This program will help by allowing there to be a more visible presence of police at the school as well as assisting with any problems or violations that may come up at the school. The program will also help in building trust between the students and the police department.

Chief Anderson is still working on getting a new K-9 for the department. He has also been going over complaints he has received about properties. He informed the council that these are being looked into as well as all the other things the department has been working on. He informed the Council that there have been two major drug busts here in town within the last 2 months.

Chief Anderson introduced Bailey Schull to the Council. Bailey has been in the process of taking her firearms training. Mayor Lowe asked Bailey what made her want to become a Police officer. Bailey responded that she has always had an interest in Criminal Justice and she has an Uncle that serves in a branch law enforcement as well.

R18-80Alderman Mason moved, seconded by Alderman Dodson to issue the $500.00 contribution to the Fall Festival.

Roll Call:

Ayes: Alderman Mason, Mahin, Miller, Dodson.

Nays: None

Absent; Alderman Kirby, Alderman Francis (at time of vote)

Chairman declared motion carried.

R18-81Alderman Mason moved, seconded by Alderman Dodson to hire Bailey Schull as a full –time officer for the Police department.

Roll Call:

Ayes: Alderman Mason, Mahin, Miller, Dodson.

Nays: None

Absent; Alderman Kirby, Alderman Francis (at time of vote)

Chairman declared motion carried.

There being no further business, the meeting adjourned at 7:17 P.M.
