Former state university employee Shurtleff paid in $154K to pension fund, could collect $3.8M in retirement

Former state university employee Craig Shurtleff, who retired in January 2017, saved $154,296 toward a pension over 30 years working for state universities, State Universities Retirement System of Illinois records show.

Over 30 years of retirement, Shurtleff would collect as much as $3.8 million, according to a projection by Local Government Information Services (LGIS), which publishes Peoria Standard.

The projection assumes Shurtleff received $79,929 in the first year of retirement, then 3 percent annual increases thereafter, compounded.

After 2 years of retirement, Shurtleff will have already received $162,256 in retirement benefits, or more than the sum total of the retiree's contributions to the state pension fund.
