City of Atlanta issued the following announcement on July 9.
Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms announced effective July 1, 2019, Phase II of compensation adjustments for the Atlanta Police Department (APD) has been implemented. This second adjustment will bring affected officers—senior police officers and investigators—to the 90th percentile of the competitive benchmark as identified by the Atlanta Police Foundation’s compensation study. SPO’s and investigators can expect to see the pay adjustment in their July 19, 2019 paycheck.
Last year, Mayor Bottoms charted an unprecedented comprehensive plan to raise compensation for APD and implemented Phase I—bringing patrolling police officers to their competitive benchmark—ahead of schedule.
“This administration made a promise to the women and men who wear the badge and we kept that promise,” said Mayor Bottoms. “Already, we are getting results, with recruitment growing at the fastest pace in recent history. Thank you to Chief Shields for her bold leadership, and the Atlanta Police Foundation for being a true partner with the City to do right by public servants who place themselves in harm’s way to keep us safe.”
Ranks above SPO and investigator will receive adjustments during Phase III in July of 2020 and Phase IV in July 2021.
“The Mayor and City Council’s ongoing commitment to addressing longstanding pay issues for police officers is critical to our vision for a safe city,” said Atlanta Police Chief Erika Shields. “Having a competitive pay scale is allowing us to fill vacancies, recruit top talent and retain our best officers. It’s a true game-changer for us.”
The Atlanta Police Foundation commissioned a comprehensive market assessment in order to form base pay recommendations for APD’s police ranks. Once the study was complete, Mayor Bottoms convened a series of priority meetings with APD, the Atlanta Police Foundation, City of Atlanta officials and other key stakeholders to develop the compensation plan.
