A COVID-19 testing site at Peoria saw a high flow of patients in the first day that it was open.

With just over an hour left in the day, the Peoria testing center used 135 out of 150 tests, according to County Health Department administrator Monica Hendrickson. Test supplies depend on the influx of patients and the demand for tests needed, and Peoria is already in high demand for coronavirus tests.

"You might not be seen in one day, but definitely come back the next," Hendrickson told Peoria Public Radio. "We want to make sure we get as many people as possible tested,"Inadequate testing was a concern for Peoria which is why three additional Peoria sites were open with tests supplied by the state."

As of May 18, Illinois reported 94,191 confirmed cases of the coronavirus, including 4,177 deaths. Peoria County has 159 confirmed cases of COVID-19.

The old Kroger parking lot is serving as a drive-up station and that is where the majority of patients go that are in need of testing, according to Hendrickson. There is also the option for walk-up testing which is located at 2321 N. Wisconsin Ave. This testing site operates between the hours of 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. during the weekdays and 9 a.m. to noon Saturdays. There is no appointment required to be tested for the coronavirus.
