Illinois State Senate District 37 issued the following announcement on May 20.

In the wake of strong opposition by Illinois Senate and House Republican Caucuses on behalf of their constituents, Governor J. B. Pritzker is withdrawing a rule he submitted May 15 that would have made criminals of business owners.

Republican legislative leaders Senator Bill Brady and Representative Jim Durkin sent a strongly-worded statement Wednesday morning (seen below) before a meeting of the Joint Committee on Administrative Rules, which was to take action on the rule. The two leaders called the Governor’s Emergency Order “. a vast government overreach at a time when business owners are doing everything they can to stay afloat.”

Senator Chuck Weaver credits a groundswell of opposition throughout Illinois as a driving force to stop Pritzker’s rule.

“We saw an important example why it is important that citizens make their voices heard. Citizens stepped up and forced the Governor to withdraw his over-reaching rule today. To change our state, we must continue to be active and engaged in our government,” Senator Weaver said. “We would like to thank all of you for your overwhelming number of phone calls and e-mails. But we would also like to warn you that this may not be over. The Governor might try to make the same changes legislatively.”

Senator Weaver also asks residents to stay involved, keep an eye on the law-making process, and continue to let lawmakers know what they think.

“It is important you do no let up. As Illinoisans, you must rise up as one voice, united together to support the small businesses and families in Illinois,” he added. “Let’s continue the focus on letting businesses open based on their unique circumstance to operate safely, and not on an arbitrary and subjective designation of essential vs. non-essential.”
