ILLINOIS STATE HOUSE DISTRICT 88 issued the following announcement on July 22.
If you receive unemployment benefits that you never applied for, you may be the victim of a scam. Don’t respond to any calls, emails, or text messages telling you to wire money, send cash, or put money on gift cards.

If you have received an unemployment debit card or letter in the mail which you did not apply for, you should immediately take the following steps:
Contact the Illinois Department of Employment Security at 1-800-814-0513 to report the identity theft
Do NOT activate the debit card
Have your credit report checked for suspicious activity
Go to the Federal Trade Commission’s website to find out more about how to spot and report identity theft
