City of Mason City Council met March 9.

Here is the minutes provided by the council:

Call to order by Mayor Bruce Lowe

Council members physically present were Dan Mason, Gerald Mahin, Scott Francis, Kevin Snyder, Jim Miller, and Julie Mize. Also present were Treasurer Mike Griffin, City Clerk Michele Whitehead, Superintendent Wayne Dixon, Officer Schoonover and Amy Ziegolowsky.

Chairman declared quorum present.

No Citizens addressed the Council

R20-19 Alderman Mason moved, seconded by Alderman Miller to approve the minutes of the February 24th, 2020 regular council meeting, the treasurer’s report, and the bills and advanced checks be allowed and warrants drawn for payment. (To be inserted in minute’s book)

Ayes: Mize, Snyder, Miller, Francis, Mahin and Mason

Nays: None

Absent: None

Chairman declared motion carried.

Superintendent Dixon addressed the Council regarding a few items. He informed the Council that Bayer is considering hooking on to the city sewer at their expense. Bayer’s engineer will complete the design and submit it to the City for approval.

Superintendent Dixon said that the City needs to replace the current ton cylinder for Chlorine with a 150 lb. container to be put in a fiberglass building. The City engineers will fill out the EPA applications and permits.

R20-20 Alderman Mason moved, seconded by Alderman Snyder to approve the 150 lb. chlorine containment with fiberglass building with applications and permits to be completed by CMT.

Ayes: Mize, Snyder, Miller, Francis, Mahin and Mason

Nays: None

Absent: None

Chairman declared motion carried.

Superintendent Dixon said that a study needs to be done regarding installing a new water tower, the study would be completed by City engineers, CMT, at a cost of approximately $30,000.

R20-21 Alderman Mason moved, seconded by Alderman Snyder to approve the expenditure of $30,000.00 to CMT to conduct a water tower study.

Ayes: Mize, Snyder, Miller, Francis, Mahin and Mason

Nays: None

Absent: None

Chairman declared motion carried.

Alderman Miller said that there are 10 trees, 12 stumps and one tree needs trimming. Randy’s Tree Service quoted $8930.00 to complete the work. The Council approved

R20-22 Alderman Miller moved, seconded by Alderman Snyder to approve the expenditure of $8930.00 to Randy’s Tree Service for dangerous tree removal.

Chairman declared motion carried.

Superintendent Dixon talked about the City wide clean up. There are two weekends available, May 9 or May 16, 2020. A Team disposals quote was less than Area disposals. The Council approved hiring A Team disposal for the clean- up contingent on their specifications regarding appliances and electronics.

R20-23 Alderman Miller moved, seconded by Alderman Mason to hire the A Team disposal for City wide clean up contingent on their specifications regarding appliances and electronics.

Nays: None

Absent: None

Chairman declared motion carried.

Frank McMahan had sent in a request to close the alleys around his home for a large family Easter egg hunt on April 25th 2020. The request was approved

R20-24 Alderman Mason moved, seconded by Alderman Miller to allow the alley closures around the blocks of 316 W. Myrtle for an Easter egg hunt on Sat, April 25th, 2020.

Ayes: Mize, Snyder, Miller, Francis, Mahin and Mason

Nays: None

Absent: None

Chairman declared motion carried.

R20-25 Alderman Miller moved, seconded by Alderman Francis to approve the MFT expense statements for 2018 and 2019.

Ayes: Mize, Snyder, Miller, Francis, Mahin and Mason

Nays: None

Absent: None

Chairman declared motion carried.

The Council discussed the purchase of property at 206 E. Pine. The council agreed to pay $20,000.00 + closing cost and to give the current owner 60 days to empty the building and clean up the property. Contingent on City attorney approval.

R20-26Alderman Mason moved, seconded by Alderman Francis to approve the purchase of 206 E. Pine at a cost of $20.000.00 plus closing costs contingent on city attorney approval.

Ayes: Mize, Snyder, Miller, Francis, Mahin and Mason

Nays: None

Absent: None

Chairman declared motion carried.

There being no further business the meeting adjourned at 7:39 P.M.
