Peoria's Midwest Bioprocessing Center has been awarded $193,138 from the Department of Health and Human Services' Small Business Innovation Research Program (SBIR), the Heart of Illinois News reported in August.
The SBIR Program supports small businesses seeking to commercialize innovative biomedical technologies and enables them to participate in federal research and development, develop life-saving technologies and create jobs.
"I'm pleased to announce that these federal dollars will help advance crucial research happening right here in Peoria," Rep. Cheri Bustos (R-Ill) said, Heart of Illinois reported. "As a member of the House Appropriations Committee, I have worked to support funding for programs like this to invest in groundbreaking research and technology and am committed to continuing to work to support local organizations and innovative development."
Dr. Leila Aminova at Midwest Bioprocessing Center is leading a research project to develop sugar types that can be used in pharmaceutical research to create anti-cancer and anti-viral drugs, Heart of Illinois reported.
