Officials of the Peoria Police Dept. announced on Nov. 19 the department’s visitor lobby would be closed although law enforcement services remain, because of restrictions to deal with a spike in COVOD-19 cases.

Registering of sex offenders, fingerprinting and vehicle impound releases will remain available to the public,  Heart of Illinois website said. Interviews for the purpose of investigations will also remain.

Because of the pandemic services that have been discontinued include the issuing of clearance letters for prospective employees, adoptions or VISA applications, non-emergency fingerprinting and photo ID’s for government work.

The report said persons looking to use the parking lot at the Police Dept. on Walnut Street as a safe locale for the exchange of goods can still do so. However, surveillance camera coverage will not be continuously provided.

People can call 309-494-8301 to ask for specific camera monitoring, the report added.

Closing of the lobby at the Department is a result of new “Tier 3” restrictions ordered by Gov. J.B. Pritzker limiting the hours of public places and closing businesses such as gaming centers and casinos in the wake of a surge in coronavirus cases over the past month.
