City Of Canton issued the following announcement on Dec. 25.
Fulton County Clerk and Recorder Patrick O’Brian is asking residents to consider subscribing to Fulton County’s Property Fraud alert service.
“According to the FBI, property fraud also known as “deed fraud” is the fastest-growing, white-collar crime in the United States,” said O’Brian. Fulton County has a subscription service that is free to all residents to combat this before it becomes a major problem for property owners. “The County Recorder’s office has offered this service for a number of years, however, after meeting with our vendor that provides this service, it was discovered that only 30 residents have subscribed to this program,” he added. “I encourage our residents to take a moment and subscribe, it could save them hours of time, legal fees, and provide peace of mind,” he said.
“Subscribing is simple, takes about 1 minute, and is free to the subscriber,” he said. Residents can sign up by going to www.propertyfraudalert.com/fultonil.
Some other tips to avoid property fraud include:
-Check official records for any deeds, mortgages, or liens on your property and make sure they are accurate.
-If your property is unoccupied or you go out of town for a length of time, make sure your mail is not piling up.
-Make sure the assessment and collector offices have the correct mailing address for you or the correct person who should have received notices about your property.
