State Sen. Win Stoller asked about the budget sought by the Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority from the Senate Appropriations Committee for fiscal year 2022.

Stoller requested further information about MPEA’s plans in light of the current pandemic situation.

“So, I’m just curious, have you done any projections if this would happen again, what would be the potential impact of the shortfall that has to be made up in sales tax?” Stoller asked. “If we have another – you know – if COVID gets worse and we have another impact this summer on the tourism industry. Do you know what the potential impact could be?"

Jason Bormann, MPEA chief financial officer, said he would anticipate that the draw on the state tax would be $36 million if fiscal year 2022 would be similar to fiscal year 2021.

Sen. Don Harmon (D-Oak Park) filed SB0438 which “Makes appropriations for the ordinary and contingent expenses of the Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 2021, as follows: Other State Funds $267,689,800.”

MPEA is a municipal corporation created by the Illinois General Assembly and owns McCormick Place and Hyatt Regency McCormick Place.
