Bradley University Athletics issued the following announcement on July 27
Always A Brave is still dancing in The Basketball Tournament after pulling away for a 70-50 win in the second round of the TBT Illinois Regional against No. 15 seed Jackson TN Underdawgs in front of a revved up home crowd Monday night at Carver Arena.
The group of Bradley alumni will play host to one more game in the TBT Illinois Regional by taking on one of the tournament favorites, Boeheim's Army (Syracuse alumni), in the third round Wednesday night at Carver Arena. Tickets for Wednesday's doubleheader begin at $20 and are available online at thetournament.com/Illinois or in person at the Peoria Civic Center Toyota Box Office from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday and starting at 4:30 pm Wednesday. Bradley University students, faculty and staff once again may purchase tickets for just $10 by presenting their University ID at the box office windows.
Tickets for Wednesday's action will be good for both games of the TBT Illinois Region Third Round. Defending TBT champion and No. 1 seed Golden Eagles (Marquette alumni) will take on No. 5 seed Autism Army in the 6 p.m. opener, followed at 8 o'clock by Always A Brave against Boeheim's Army.
The Most Outstanding Player of the 2020 Missouri Valley Conference Men's Basketball Championship, guard Darrell Brown, Jr. led Always A Brave to Monday's second-round by leading all players with 18 points, six assists and three steals and sharing game-high honors with six rebounds. All nine players to take the court for Always A Brave contributed at least three points.
Nate Kennell, who finished with eight points, finished the third quarter with a steal and tough transition layup at the buzzer to send Always A Brave into the final period with a 49-44 lead. Holding a 61-48 edge to start the Elam Ending, Always A Brave closed on a 9-0 run, capped by a Marcellus Sommerville 3-pointer to walk off the win.
The Bradley and Syracuse college teams have a bit of postseason history with the Braves owning a 3-1 all-time series advantage. The college teams last met March 15, 1982 at the Carrier Dome, where Bradley earned a 95-81 win in the second round of the NIT on the way to the program's fourth NIT championship. The other three games in the series were played during a span of a year: Bradley earned a 78-66 win in the first round of the 1950 NIT at Madison Square Garden and followed with a 72-64 win in the opening round of the 1950 Sugar Bowl Tournament in New Orleans, before Syracuse knocked off the Braves in the championship game of the 1951 National Campus Tournament at Bradley's Robertson Memorial Fieldhouse
