Rep. Tim Butler (R-Springfield) wants groups to apply for grants to help develop the historic Route 66. The state intends to give some projects preference over others.

The funding opportunity creates a chance for the certified convention and visitors’ bureaus on the route to start projects that will improve the Route 66 experience in Illinois.

"Great news for Illinois Route 66 Scenic Byway: grant funding is available to support tourism and preservation along our 300 miles of the Mother Road." Butler said in a post to his official Facebook account on Feb. 4. "As we drive towards the road's 100th birthday in 2026, Route 66 still plays a vital role in both the history and economy of our region. I'm a proud to not only live right on 66, but to be a vocal advocate for this iconic American treasure. #Route66Centennial202."

Butler also took the opportunity to praise the region in general.

“The 87th District and Capital Region contains so much rich history and Route 66 is one of the brightest gems" Butler said. “This is a great opportunity for our region to improve this gem and the wonderful benefits the Mother Road brings to our communities along its path.”

The deadline for applications is March 7, according to the Notice of Funding Opportunity. The estimated total of the grant is $4,000,000.

All projects will not be treated the same with preference being shown for certain goals. An emphasis will be placed on statewide projects that will cover all of Route 66 from Chicago to Chain of Rocks Bridge in scope. Another priority is to develop already existing attractions along Route 66.

Projects that support wayfinding for travelers will also receive a priority. The state also wants to adapt to the future of tourism with support for electric vehicles. Butler especially wants citizens in his 66th District to participate in these Route 66 programs.
