State Rep. Norine Hammond (R-Macomb) hopes her ombudsman informational bill will breathe life into a program that already exists in Illinois. The bill was discussed on the House floor on March 4.
"This bill brings to life the ombudsman program that currently exists in the state of Illinois. Obviously, it wasn't very well known until we got into the pandemic but we want to make sure all residents and their families are aware of the program. I would appreciate an aye vote," Hammond said.
House Bill 4763, which is sponsored by Hammond and Rep. Charlie Meier (R-Highland), passed the House with 98 Yes votes and zero No votes.
Hammond's bill aims to make the program more accessible by requiring licensed home care facilities to supply information about the state's ombudsmen program on their web sites.
The bill is sponsored by Sen. Jason Plummer (R-Vandalia) in the Senate.
The bill's intent is to make the ombudsman program in the state more accessible. The Ombudsman Program was authorized in 2013 by the Illinois Act of Aging, and its aim is to offer advocacy services outside of the long-term care setting. Ombudsmen can be found throughout the state, and they work toward protecting the rights of the elderly with disabilities. You can call the helpline at 1-800-252-8966 or 711 (TRS) if you want to talk to an ombudsman.
