Honorary Street Naming to be Held on Thursday, June 9 at 10:00 am
June 3, 2022 (Peoria, IL) An honorary street naming will be held for community leader
and education advocate Aurthur Mae Perkins on Thursday, June 9. The street sign will be located
at the corner of Hamilton and Monroe Streets. A short program will be held at 10:00 am in the
parking lot of the Peoria Public Library Main Library, 107 NE Monroe Street. Limited metered
parking is available in the lot. On-street metered parking will also be available.
The sign, proposed by Hedy Elliott and Marcella Teplitz, was sponsored by Second
District Council Member Charles Grayeb. The location of the sign was chosen as a nod to Mrs.
Perkins’ dedication to the Peoria Public Library system, having served as a Board Member.
Known throughout the community for her advocacy of education, Mrs. Perkins is not only known as a
teacher but also as one of the longest-serving principals in the Peoria Public School system. After
receiving her GED at the age of 38, she received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Bradley
University. She has been acknowledged for her lifelong commitment to education with numerous
awards and accolades. A member of many boards, including the Peoria Public Library Board and the
Peoria Housing Authority Board, Mrs. Perkins was also appointed to the State of
Illinois Prisoner Review Board by Governor J.B. Pritzker.
