City of Pekin Traffic Safety Committee met May 6.

Here are the minutes provided by the committee:

PRESENT: Josie Esker, John Dossey, Sarah Newcomb, Brett Olson, Justin Reeise, Trent Reeise

The meeting was called to order at 8:30 a.m.

Motion by Brett to approve the agenda, seconded by Trent. All in favor.

Motion by Brett to approve the April 1, 2022 meeting minutes, seconded by Trent. All in favor.

Public Comments

Dan Shipman was in attendance voicing his ongoing displeasure with the request he has made many times in the past regarding no parking on the street on Park Ave. from Garden St. to Court St. in front of a house he owns in that immediate area. He reported his disagreement with the Hanson report of the results of their independent study in this location. He is unhappy that his request continues to be denied. Chris Shipman also spoke on this topic asking that the committee consider the safety of her grandchildren.

Old Business:

1. No Parking Sign – 1905 Quail Hollow Rd.

Josie reached out asking for a formal request explaining the concern in this location. No request has been received at this time. Brett made a motion to table this item until a request is received. Justin seconded the motion. All in favor.

New Business:

1. Intersection of S. Capitol St. and Winter St.

A review of crash history and the physical area in this location indicated that there is a tree in this location that may be hindering some visibility. With the low volume of crashes, Brett made a motion for stepped up enforcement in this location. John seconded the motion. All in favor.

2. Parking Request – 1320 S. 5th St.

Brenden Williams was in attendance at the meeting regarding this request. He is the pastor of Zion Baptist Church at this address. He is asking for consideration for three requests:

∙ to have a sign posted for northbound S. 5th St. in this area indicating church ahead or pedestrians. Justin made a motion to have a sign posted in this area indicating pedestrians ahead. Trent seconded the motion. All in favor.

∙ designated handicapped parking right in front of the church. Brett made a motion to make a recommendation to City Council for a handicapped parking space in this location. Trent seconded the motion. All in favor. Josie will prepare the request for City Council.

∙ hand rail between the curb and the sidewalk next to their walkway leading to the church building. Per discussion, Inspections will work with Mr. Williams regarding the need for a building permit for this. Legal needs to be consulted regarding liability.

3. Handicapped Parking around McKenzie Building

Brett made a motion to approve the 2 handicapped spaces in front of the McKenzie Building that were accepted via a grant. John seconded the motion. All in favor. John made a motion to eliminate excess handicapped parking spaces around the courthouse block. Trent seconded the motion. All in favor.
