In a May 15 Facebook post, Illinois Sen. Sally Turner thanked police officers statewide and recognized National Police Week.
"Happy National Police Week! Thank you to all of the men and women of our law enforcement for everything you do to help keep us safe."
As a Republican senator first elected in 2021, Turner has been actively involved in legislative matters, serving on committees such as Ethics and Senate Higher Education, according to the Illinois Senate.
National Police Week, an annual event dedicated to honoring America's law enforcement community, is a collaborative effort involving numerous organizations. The National Law Enforcement Memorial Fund, one of the key contributors, highlighted the significance of this week and mentioned the 35th Annual Candlelight Vigil, which took place on May 13 and brought together individuals to pay respects.
Sen. Turner's Facebook post additionally included a video statement where she acknowledged the challenges that law enforcement officers have faced in recent years. She expressed her deep appreciation and thanked them for their unwavering commitment to ensuring public safety.
"Happy National Police Week," Turner said. "You know in the last few years, we know that your jobs have been even more difficult. And we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for going out every day, getting in your cars, and running the risks that you do. And we can’t thank you enough. Thank you from our friends, family, and all of us here in the Illinois State Senate, Thank you for what you do for us every day.”
The Illinois Fraternal Order of Police also participated in the celebration of National Police Week. On May 15, they organized two significant events: the Annual National Peace Officers' Memorial Service Wreath Laying and Stand Watch for the Fallen. These events allowed the community to come together and honor those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.
National Police Week serves as a reminder of the selfless dedication and sacrifice of law enforcement officers nationwide. It is a time to express their communities' appreciation and support for the invaluable service they provide.
