In a statement following the City Council meeting on February 13, 2024, Mayor Ali addressed the ongoing protests in Peoria surrounding the war in Gaza, the West Bank, and Israel. The mayor acknowledged the concerns expressed by many in attendance and their call for a resolution urging an immediate ceasefire in the conflict.
Mayor Ali highlighted that several cities nationwide, including Chicago, have already approved similar resolutions. She noted that Chicago's city council was divided on the issue, voting 24-23 in support of their resolution. However, Mayor Ali emphasized that Peoria should not allow this international issue to divide the city or its communities.
"We cannot afford to allow this international issue to divide our city or our communities," Mayor Ali stated. "Yet, I don’t want it to appear that our leadership is not concerned about the tragic loss of life that is occurring overseas daily and impacting the families and loved ones of some of our residents. We care about all human life in Peoria and beyond."
The mayor further clarified the stance of the city's leadership on the matter. "As city leaders, this is not our fight," she asserted. "We do not vote on arms to foreign countries. We are not elected to legislate national issues. We will not take sides on this issue; it is not our duty."
Mayor Ali emphasized the importance of maintaining neutrality while showing compassion. "As city leaders, we must be neutral, yet compassionate, in this matter," she stated. "This is a divisive issue, and we cannot allow it to divide Peoria. We sympathize with the loss of human life and pray for Peace and Conflict Resolution."
The mayor's message resonated with all sides involved in the issue. She made it clear that the primary focus of the city council and its leadership is to prioritize the well-being and unity of the Peoria community.
As the statement concluded, Mayor Ali mentioned that video recordings of the February 13, 2024, City Council meeting are available for those interested in watching the proceedings.
