U.S. Representative Darin LaHood and Eric Sorensen have penned a letter to the United States Postal Service (USPS) Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, expressing their concerns about the Mail Processing Facility Review (MPFR) of the Peoria Processing and Distribution Center (P&DC) facility.
In the letter, LaHood and Sorensen emphasize the potential impact on the local community, stating, "The potential decision to move good-paying, high-quality jobs from downstate Illinois to the South Suburban P&DC in Bedford Park, Illinois, will harm working families in our region and likely have a negative impact on the downstate economy in Illinois."
Furthermore, the representatives highlight the importance of timely mail delivery and customer service, stating, "Any proposal that would jeopardize timely mail delivery, diminish customer service, or risk local jobs is unacceptable. Our constituents rely on the services provided by USPS, and our local postal service centers are important cornerstones of our community."
To gain more clarity on the situation, LaHood and Sorensen have requested USPS to provide answers to specific questions by March 29, 2024. These questions include inquiries about the expected impact on jobs and families in the Peoria area, guarantees of improved efficiency and quicker mail delivery by moving operations, and efforts to support employees who may not be able to relocate to Bedford Park.
The representatives' letter underscores their commitment to advocating for the interests of their constituents and ensuring that any decisions made regarding the Peoria facility consider the well-being of the local community.
