The City of Peoria and the American Red Cross have joined forces to launch the "Sound the Alarm" campaign, aimed at promoting the importance of having properly working smoke alarms in homes. The initiative, which seeks to install free smoke alarms nationwide, was announced at a press conference held at the Central Fire Station in Peoria.
Speaking at the event, Fire Chief Shawn Sollberger emphasized the significance of the campaign, highlighting the crucial role of smoke alarms in saving lives and preventing disasters. Division Chief of Fire Prevention, Nathaniel Rice, echoed this sentiment, stating, "I’ve seen firsthand the difference a simple fire alarm can make. It’s not just a device; it’s a lifeline. It’s the first line of defense in saving lives and preventing disasters."
Lynda Hruska, Regional Executive Director of the American Red Cross, and Tim Gronewold, Chairman of the Board for the organization, were also present at the press conference to show their support for the initiative.
Residents are encouraged to sign up for a free ten-year built-in battery smoke alarm through the campaign. Those interested can register their households for the free smoke alarm and installation by visiting http://tinyurl.com/PeoriaSmokeAlarm24.
According to the National Fire Protection Association, working smoke alarms can decrease the chance of dying in a fire by fifty-five percent. Therefore, the Peoria Fire Department and the American Red Cross are urging all community members to ensure they have properly installed smoke alarms in their homes.
