Rainfall in the City of Peoria has caused a combined sewer overflow (CSO) into the Illinois River within the last 24 hours from one or more of the locations shown on the map located here.
In response to this issue, the City of Peoria has issued a warning to residents. According to the alert, individuals are advised to refrain from full-body contact with the Illinois River in the area downstream from Detweiller Marina. The notice highlights the potential health risks, stating, "You may get sick if you swallow water while swimming, Jet Skiing, or water skiing in these areas after a combined sewer overflow."
The City of Peoria is actively taking steps to address the problem of combined sewer overflows. A spokesperson for the city mentioned, "The City of Peoria is constructing projects to reduce combined sewer overflows (CSOs) to the Illinois River during wet weather, as required under the Clean Water Act and the CSO Consent Decree."
