PEORIA, IL - The PeoriaCorps' ninth graduating cohort is set to be celebrated at a graduation ceremony on May 3, as announced today. The event will take place from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. at 813 SW Washington Street, and will feature At-large Peoria Council Member, Dr. Bernice Gordan-Young, PhD, LCPC, as the guest speaker.
The graduation ceremony aims to highlight the accomplishments of the AmeriCorps National Volunteer program and commemorate the successful completion of the 9th cohort, which includes members Bradley Miller, Jessica Smith, Ashlin Thomas, and Dontay Watson.
PeoriaCorps, established in October 2017, focuses on providing career exploration opportunities for unemployed individuals aged 18 and older, allowing them to engage in community service activities. Members undergo hands-on training in environmental beautification, stewardship, and green landscaping solutions, along with classroom sessions on essential soft skills for their professional development.
Over the past six months, the cohort has been actively involved in green infrastructure projects across Peoria, involving tasks such as native plant maintenance, debris removal, and implementing green infrastructure practices in the city. Additionally, members have explored various career paths and obtained certifications including CPR, OSHA 10, and HAZWOPER 24 for General Industry.
Looking ahead, PeoriaCorps has already enrolled its 10th cohort with a completion date set for August 31st, while preparations are underway for the 11th cohort scheduled to commence in early September 2024. Those interested in joining the program to earn education awards, living allowances, and enhance their skills while contributing to the city's environmental well-being are encouraged to apply through the PeoriaCorps webpage.
