August 27, 2024 (PEORIA, IL) — The city of Peoria has announced the appointment of Chester “Chet” Tomczyk as the new City Treasurer, effective August 28, 2024. This decision follows the resignation of Treasurer Stephen Morris due to professional and personal obligations. The City Council voted unanimously to appoint Tomczyk during tonight’s council meeting.

Tomczyk is recognized for his twenty-year tenure as President and Chief Executive Officer of WTVP-TV and Central Illinois Public Media. During his time at the station, he managed media operations including finance, fundraising, operations, and community relations. He also led the transition from analog to digital broadcasting and introduced high-definition and online programming. Additionally, Tomczyk has volunteered with various organizations such as the Illinois Public Broadcasting Council, Pediatric Resource Center, Illinois Valley Public Telecommunications Corporation, and served as a commissioner for the City’s Human Resource Commission.

“Chet Tomczyk brings a wealth of knowledge and a proven track record of leadership to this vital role,” said Mayor Rita Ali. “With his track record in our community, we are thrilled he applied for the position. I am confident that his expertise will ensure our city’s responsible fiscal practices.”

In his new role, Tomczyk will oversee the administration and management of collecting, verifying, recording, and depositing all taxes, fines, and fees due to the city.

The City Council and the community extend their gratitude to Stephen Morris for his service during his tenure. The consolidated election for City Treasurer will be held on April 1, 2025.
