FOIA Request to City Of Canton Finance Department Regarding Sales Tax Collected from Retailers on October 25, 2024.

As a part of our ongoing commitment to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, we at the Peoria Standard have sent a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to the City Of Canton Finance Department. The request, sent on October 25, 2024, seeks information regarding sales tax collected from retailers since the beginning of the year.

The specific details requested include monthly sales tax collections compared to projections, the number of active retail locations paying sales tax each month, and the names of each retailer along with their gross retail sales reported for each month.

Access to these public records is essential for us at Peoria Standard to fulfill our professional responsibilities. These include holding public institutions accountable and providing transparency to the public. As members of the media involved in gathering and reporting news to the public, we believe we are eligible for a fee waiver as media professionals.

We await a response from the City Of Canton Finance Department and will continue our efforts in disseminating vital information that contributes towards government accountability and transparency.
