Members of PeoriaCorps will take part in a service project on Tuesday, January 14, at 10 a.m. to honor Martin Luther King Junior Day of Service. The event will occur in the 700 block of Dr. Martin Luther King Junior Drive.

The project involves removing bush honeysuckle and replanting the area with native grasses and wildflowers. These plants are beneficial for stormwater runoff. Bush honeysuckle is an invasive shrub that affects native plants and ecosystems by altering soil composition.

Amanda Wilson, Program Director for PeoriaCorps, stated, “This service project embodies Dr. King’s vision of the Beloved Community by improving the safety and aesthetics of the area by removing undesirable shrubs and replanting with beneficial flowers for pollinators, songbirds, and other wildlife.”

Informational signage will be installed once the work is complete to educate passersby on the benefits of native urban landscapes.

The public is invited to join in this community clean-up event, which honors Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy and aligns with AmeriCorps' theme of “Building a Beloved Community.” Volunteers are advised to dress appropriately for the weather, wear sturdy work gloves, and park in the block of 500 N. Sheridan.
