UChicago Medicine AdventHealth GlenOaks has initiated a medically assisted detox program to support individuals struggling with drug or alcohol abuse. The program aims to help patients become medically clear of substances before entering rehabilitation. Patients are admitted to the hospital, where they receive anti-craving medications and treatment for any other medical conditions.

Chief Nursing Officer Deb Ayanian explained that the staff assists patients in connecting with rehabilitation providers and other necessary care after stabilization. "We are an ideal place for patients to come for the beginning phase of recovery," Ayanian stated.

The detox program is overseen by GlenOaks Medical Director Rajeswar Rajagopalan, M.D., who specializes in addiction medicine. Both he and Ayanian have experience developing addiction treatment programs at previous health systems. They launched this initiative following a community health needs assessment that highlighted addiction services as a priority.

"Alcohol addiction is the number one issue we see, followed by addiction to opioids, especially fentanyl," Rajagopalan noted. He also mentioned rising issues with cocaine, amphetamines, and designer drugs like kratom and ecstasy.

The new program allows GlenOaks to admit more addiction patients from their emergency room than before, addressing both substance withdrawal and other medical needs simultaneously. "We take care of the whole person," Ayanian emphasized.

Rajagopalan added that having various specialists available within the hospital enhances patient care during detoxification. Medications are used to manage withdrawal symptoms safely under his guidance.

By mid-December, over 90 patients had participated in the program, which adheres to best practices from recognized medical boards. The program accepts most insurance plans including Medicaid.

Rajagopalan and Ayanian aim to expand services at GlenOaks beyond detoxification into comprehensive addiction treatment options like residential rehabilitation. They encourage those questioning their substance use or its impact on life responsibilities to seek help promptly. "Acknowledging the problem is the first step toward recovery," Ayanian advised.
