On February 6, 2025, Congressmen Darin LaHood and Josh Gottheimer introduced the No DeepSeek on Government Devices Act in Washington, D.C. The proposed legislation aims to prohibit the use and download of the Chinese Communist Party's (CCP) AI software, DeepSeek, on government devices.

"The technology race with the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) is not one the United States can afford to lose," stated Rep. LaHood. He emphasized that DeepSeek poses a significant national security threat by acquiring data from U.S. users for unidentified purposes by the CCP. "Under no circumstances can we allow a CCP company to obtain sensitive government or personal data," he added.

Rep. Gottheimer highlighted concerns about the CCP's intentions: "The Chinese Communist Party has made it abundantly clear that it will exploit any tool at its disposal to undermine our national security." He expressed alarm over evidence suggesting DeepSeek is used to collect sensitive data from U.S. citizens and stressed the urgency of banning it from government devices.

Recent research indicates that DeepSeek’s code is linked directly to the CCP and capable of sharing user data with China Mobile, a company banned by the FCC in the United States due to its ties with the Chinese military. Concerns have arisen over users unknowingly sharing sensitive information with DeepSeek, which could be exploited by foreign adversaries like the CCP.

Both congressmen view this bipartisan effort as crucial for safeguarding American data and maintaining leadership in AI technology.
