Jim Rule, Chairman of the Tazewell County Republicans, has said that the Department of Justice's (DOJ) lawsuit against Illinois represents a critical moment for sanctuary policies, which he believes have endangered American lives. The upcoming hearing on March 5 will serve to hold leaders accountable, Rule told the Peoria Standard on February 10.

"The DOJ's lawsuit against Illinois and Chicago isn't just overdue; it's a long-awaited call for accountability for the reckless sanctuary policies that have endangered American citizens," said Rule. "Governors and mayors like Pritzker and Johnson have shown a disturbing disregard for public safety, protecting criminals over the very citizens they're meant to serve. The March 5 House Oversight Committee hearing will shine a light on their disastrous decisions, forcing them to face the consequences of their actions. This is more than a hearing—it's a turning point for justice."

According to Fox News, the DOJ filed a lawsuit against Illinois and Chicago on February 6, alleging interference with federal immigration enforcement. The lawsuit targets Governor J.B. Pritzker, Mayor Brandon Johnson, and others, claiming that state and local laws obstruct federal immigration law and violate the Supremacy Clause. It further alleges that illegal immigration poses national security risks exacerbated by sanctuary policies in Illinois. Specific laws cited include the Way Forward Act and TRUST Act, which are alleged to hinder enforcement efforts and allow criminals to avoid deportation and remain in Chicago.

In a press release dated February 5 on the House Oversight Committee website, Chairman James Comer announced a hearing on sanctuary cities scheduled for March 5. Comer said that "Sanctuary mayors owe the American people an explanation for city policies that jeopardize public safety and violate federal immigration law by releasing dangerous criminal illegal aliens back onto the streets." He emphasized that policies in cities like Boston, Chicago, Denver, and New York City prioritize criminal illegal aliens over American citizens. Comer added that this is unacceptable and insisted their leaders must be held accountable.

Fox 32 reported that Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson will testify before Congress on March 5 regarding the city’s sanctuary policies. The House Oversight Committee invited Johnson due to concerns that such policies allegedly violate federal law and harm residents. Alongside mayors from New York, Boston, and Denver, Johnson will defend his city's sanctuary policies during his testimony.

Jim Rule was first elected as Chairman of the Tazewell County Republicans in 2018. According to the organization’s website, Rule focuses on increasing Republican voter turnout, expanding party membership, and communicating party positions on issues relevant to Tazewell County voters.
