Beginning Wednesday, February 26, work to remove invasive trees and shrubs will resume along North Orange Prairie Road near West Wood Sage Road. The restoration efforts are weather permitting and will continue through Thursday, February 27.

As part of the project, small brush pile burns are planned near the three detention basins along Orange Prairie Road. These controlled burns will take place during daytime hours.

This initiative is a segment of the Orange Prairie Detention Basins Restoration Project. The project's timeline spans five years, focusing on restoration and repair work at these detention basins. Invasive plant removal will involve mowing and select pesticide use, in addition to the controlled burns aimed at eliminating non-native plants.

The City outlines several benefits of controlled burns: "Promoting new growth for wildflowers and other plants," "Recycling nutrients back into the soil," "Improving the overall ecosystem health for plants and animals," and "Minimizing insects and the spread of plant diseases."

Further details on current and upcoming green infrastructure projects by the City can be accessed online.
