Rainfall in Peoria has led to a combined sewer overflow (CSO) into the Illinois River. This event occurred within the last 24 hours from one or more locations shown on an official map.
The City of Peoria advises residents to avoid full-body contact with the river downstream from Detweiller Marina. The risk of illness is present for those who swallow water while engaging in activities such as swimming, jet skiing, or water skiing in affected areas following a CSO.
To address this issue, Peoria is working on projects aimed at reducing combined sewer overflows into the Illinois River during periods of wet weather. These efforts are part of compliance with requirements under the Clean Water Act and the CSO Consent Decree.
