Congressman Darin LaHood of Illinois has criticized Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson during a House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform hearing. The session, which included mayors from various sanctuary cities, focused on their lack of enforcement of federal immigration laws.
LaHood expressed his long-standing opposition to the policies surrounding sanctuary cities, emphasizing the negative effects he believes they have had on Illinois. "During my time as an elected official, I have strongly condemned the policy around sanctuary cities and the impact that it has had on the state of Illinois," said Rep. LaHood. He argued these policies have harmed the state's economy, increased crime rates, and endangered law-abiding citizens.
Addressing Mayor Johnson directly, LaHood criticized his handling of issues in Chicago over the past two years. He cited rising crime rates and low morale among law enforcement as major concerns. "I want to turn my attention to you, Mayor Brandon Johnson of Chicago," he stated. "Out-of-control crime in Chicago... Morale has never been lower with law enforcement and CPD."
LaHood also mentioned financial challenges faced by the city under Johnson's leadership, including a $2 billion deficit line of credit contrasted with significant spending on illegal immigrants. He accused Johnson of prioritizing illegal immigrants over taxpayers' interests.
The hearing featured other city leaders like Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, Denver Mayor Mike Johnston, and New York City Mayor Eric Adams. Although not a member of the committee, LaHood was allowed to participate in questioning Mayor Johnson.
Additionally, there is ongoing legal action against Illinois by President Trump and Attorney General Pam Bondi for not enforcing federal immigration laws.
