The Peoria Fire Department has announced its 150th anniversary celebration, inviting the public to an open house on April 29, 2025. The event, scheduled from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM, will take place at the Peoria Fire Central House, located at 505 NE Monroe.
The celebration will offer station tours, refreshments, and the chance to engage with Peoria's firefighters. Attendees can enjoy food, cake, and beverages while exploring the history and traditions of the department. Fire Chief Sollberger will deliver remarks, reflecting on the department's growth and its impact on the community.
The Peoria Fire Department's history dates back to December 22, 1845, when the City Council acknowledged the city's volunteer firefighters. Its first fire engine was acquired on September 10, 1846. The department was formally established as a paid, career outfit on March 9, 1875, with Orrin Norton appointed as the first Fire Chief.
The department has faced numerous significant fires throughout its history, demonstrating the bravery and commitment of its members. Notable incidents include the Woolmer’s Distillery explosion and fire on August 1, 1881, the National Hotel fire on November 12, 1911, and the Peoria Market fire on March 22, 1929. Other major incidents include the Arion Hotel fire on November 23, 1959, and the Lehmann Building fire on July 9, 1987.
The upcoming open house aims to foster connections between the community and local fire service, provide valuable fire safety information, and recognize the dedication of those who have served Peoria over the years.
