U.S. Rep. Darin LaHood (R-Ill.) praised House Republicans Thursday after they advanced a sweeping $3.3 trillion domestic policy bill aligned with President Donald Trump’s agenda, calling it a “generational piece of legislation” that delivers for working Americans and local communities.

“Today, House Republicans voted to give rocket-fuel to the United States’ economy, provide predictability and certainty for small businesses, and deliver historic tax relief for the American people,” LaHood told the Peoria Standard. “The One Big Beautiful Bill Act is a generational piece of legislation that creates more opportunities to live the American Dream. The Republican bill eliminates taxes on tips, overtime, and auto loans for hardworking Americans.”

“This legislation invests in the future of Illinois agriculture and protects high-paying manufacturing jobs in Illinois’ 16th Congressional District while boosting local economies across central and northwest Illinois,” he said. “This is a win for the 16th District and the American People. I look forward to the One Big Beautiful Bill Act being sent to President Trump’s desk to be signed into law on our nation’s Independence Day.”

The House advanced the bill in a narrow 219–213 reconciliation vote early Thursday morning following a dramatic overnight standoff.

That action came after the U.S. Senate narrowly passed the legislation by a single vote, with Vice President J.D. Vance casting the tie-breaking vote.

GOP leaders, including Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) and Trump himself, spent hours lobbying Republican holdouts to unify behind the bill. The vote followed a marathon 12-hour session in the House Rules Committee that cleared the legislation for full chamber consideration.

The 900-page bill includes Republican priorities on taxes, border enforcement, defense spending and energy policy, while raising the debt ceiling by $5 trillion and extending Trump-era tax cuts.

The bill also repeals key green energy provisions from President Biden’s Inflation Reduction Act and invest billions into Trump's border wall and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

In a show of opposition, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) launched a floor speech just before 5 a.m. that lasted more than 8 hours, using a leadership privilege to stall the bill’s progress.

LaHood represents the 16th Congressional District, which includes Jo Daviess, Ogle, Lee, Stark, Marshall and Grundy counties. It also covers most of Winnebago, Boone, Bureau, Henry and McLean counties, along with parts of Stephenson, Peoria, Tazewell, Putnam, Livingston, DeKalb and Ford counties.

LaHood was born and raised in Peoria and lives in Dunlap in Peoria County when not in D.C.
