A jury found John Timothy Jr., 41, guilty of leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident involving a death. The charges relate to an incident in South Peoria in August 2023 that resulted in the death of 28-year-old Akeem Alexander.

On August 28, 2023, at around 3:28 a.m., emergency services received an alert from a Land Rover's detection service about a crash on W. Howett. The alert provided the vehicle’s license plate and registration linked to Timothy. Officers arriving at the scene discovered Alexander lying unresponsive on the road with his damaged bicycle nearby. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Car parts, including the Land Rover's logo, were found scattered on the roadway.

Officers soon located the Land Rover on Antoinette Street with significant front-end damage and traces of red, orange, and blue paint on its bumper.

Timothy claimed his vehicle had been stolen; however, surveillance footage contradicted his statement. One video captured Alexander riding through an intersection when Timothy ran a red light at high speed and struck him before driving away without stopping. Another video showed Timothy leaving a nearby club in the Land Rover shortly before the crash.

Sentencing for Timothy is scheduled for September 17.
