An honorary street naming ceremony is scheduled for noon on Sunday, Aug. 31, at the intersection of N. New York Avenue and E. Cox Avenue to recognize the contributions of the late Wilbur and Effie Blake.
Wilbur and Effie Blake are remembered as influential members of their neighborhood, known for their commitment to education, faith, and community involvement.
Mr. Blake was instrumental in creating the first softball diamond at Peoria Stadium, a development that led to the formation of the area’s first African American softball teams. He also provided transportation for neighborhood children to attend school when he was not working.
He held memberships in several organizations including being a charter member of Peoria Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, a 32nd-degree member of Henry Brown Masonic Lodge No. 22, and a member of Kamar Temple 56 and Menelik Consistory 49.
Mrs. Blake contributed significantly to her church community by serving as head mother on the Mother’s Board at Peoria Friendship Missionary Baptist Church, singing in the choir, and participating in the cuisine committee. She received “The Most Loyal Fan” Award from District 150 due to her regular attendance at sporting events.
Together, Wilbur and Effie Blake raised twelve children, had more than fifty grandchildren, and supported many young people in achieving educational success over several decades.
