A new mural titled “Play Greater” was officially dedicated on the Adams Street side of the Jefferson Parking Deck in downtown Peoria. The event, held at Distillery Labs, featured remarks from Peoria Mayor Rita Ali, Mark Misselhorn—Vice President of the Big Picture Peoria board and Regional President for Central Illinois at PNC Bank—Brian Ray, Gilmore Foundation President Laura Cullinan, and Community Foundation of Central Illinois CEO Mark Roberts.
The mural measures 30 feet tall by 50 feet wide and highlights several notable Peoria landmarks such as City Hall, the Murray Baker Bridge, and Twin Towers. Artist Bob Doucette created the piece. Doucette is known for his work in animation, sculpture, painting, puppetry, and doll making, with his art exhibited internationally. Funding for the mural came from the Gilmore Foundation, PNC Bank, and the Community Foundation of Central Illinois. Staff support was provided by the city of Peoria.
Mayor Ali stated during the ceremony: “Public art, galleries, and cultural programming drive tourism, support local businesses, and contribute to Peoria’s economic vitality. Projects like 'Play Greater' are not only expressions of creativity—they are investments in our community and our economy."
Big Picture Peoria has contributed other murals throughout the city including Abraham Blue at the Peoria County Courthouse, Portraits of Peoria at the Main Street side of the downtown public library location, and Find Yourself at Metro Center. Another mural dedication for “Pulling Together” is scheduled for September 6 at 401 Water Street. Additionally, The Big Picture Film Festival will take place on November 21 and 22 at the Peoria Riverfront Museum.
