The City of Peoria is set to partner with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Peoria for a wall raising ceremony on Friday, October 17, at 5:00 p.m. The event will take place at 1201 W. Adrian G. Hinton Avenue, where six new affordable single-family homes will be constructed on the site of the former McKinley School.

The ceremony will mark the start of construction and is described as a significant milestone for the future homeowners. The initiative follows years of advocacy by officials and staff at federal, state, and local levels.

In 2022, the Peoria City Council allocated $943,700 from the American Rescue Plan to demolish the former school. Additional funding was secured in 2024 when U.S. Congressman Eric Sorensen obtained $500,000 through a Community Project Funding grant to support the construction of affordable housing.

The city’s staff is working closely with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Peoria to provide more quality and safe housing options. This collaboration includes providing nineteen parcels along West Adrian G. Hinton Avenue for future development. The lots are expected to accommodate a total of fourteen single-family homes.

For details about the Habitat Homeownership Program, interested parties can call 309-676-6729 x3 or send an email. Further information regarding Peoria’s housing initiatives can be obtained by contacting Joe Dulin, Community Development Director, at 309-494-8631 or via email.
