Darin LaHood, representative for Illinois’ 16th Congressional District, said he was thrilled for the family of Edan Alexander, the last American-Israeli hostage freed by Hamas, and called for the release of all remaining hostages.

“Edan Alexander, the last American-Israeli hostage held by Hamas terrorists, is finally coming home,” said LaHood, U.S. Representative of Illinois’s 16th congressional district (R), according to Facebook. “I am thrilled for his family, friends, and community. Hamas must release the remaining hostages immediately.”

LaHood shared a post from the White House Facebook account featuring a photo of President Trump holding a sign with Alexander’s face and a social media announcement about Alexander’s return. According to Trump’s post, Alexander had been held hostage by Hamas since October 2023. The President noted that Qatar and Egypt mediated the deal that secured Alexander’s release, describing it as a step toward ending the conflict and returning all hostages and remains to their families.

According to CBS News, Alexander was transferred from Hamas custody to the Red Cross and then to the Israel Defense Forces. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office released a statement reaffirming its commitment to returning all kidnapped or missing individuals, whether alive or deceased. The statement also pledged that the Israeli government would “assist in his absorption and will accompany him and his family.” On May 11, Hamas announced they would release Alexander without conditions.

The Associated Press reported that Alexander, a 19-year-old from New Jersey, was serving as a soldier when Hamas attacked an Israeli military base. He was among 251 hostages taken during the October 7, 2023 attack that sparked the war between Israel and Hamas. Alexander had moved to Israel and enlisted in its military in 2022.

Congressman LaHood has represented Illinois since 2015, initially serving in the 18th Congressional District until redistricting shifted him to the 16th District. His political career includes four years in the state senate from 2011 to 2015. LaHood also worked as a state and federal prosecutor for over nine years, including as an Assistant U.S. Attorney with the U.S. Department of Justice in Las Vegas, Nevada.
